In accordance with Article 49 of the Graduate School Regulations Enforcement Rules, we provide the following information regarding the application and selection of thesis advisors for the Fall semester 2025. Please ensure that applications and selections are completed within the designated period.
1. Eligibility
a. Selection of Thesis Advisor: Students who are in their second semester or beyond, or those who have completed their coursework (students in the integrated Bachelor’s-Master’s program: first semester).
b. Changing Thesis Advisor: Normally not permitted except in unavoidable circumstances such as the retirement of the thesis advisor or other reasons requiring a change.
c. Selecting Co-Advisor: For students whose thesis advisor will be on research leave, long-term overseas assignments, or other unavoidable reasons that will create a gap in thesis supervision.
*This does not apply if the advisor remains in the country and can provide continuous supervision.
*Starting Fall semester 2025 our Graduate School permits non-tenure full-time faculty to be selected as co-advisor

3. Number of Students per Advisor: A maximum of 3 students per semester or degree program is the principle (for more than 3 students, must provide a reason in the department meeting minutes).
4. Documents for Thesis Advisor Appointment: Gathered by the department office and submitted to the Graduate School Administration Office.
a. Students: Submit thesis advisor selection form (thesis advisor change form, co-advisor selection form) to department
b. Department (Head): Submit thesis advisor selection form (gathered), summary of thesis advisor recommendations, department meeting record to Administration Office
※ Note: Requests for changing thesis advisor or selecting a co-advisor should be submitted to the Graduate School Administrative Office with the department head's confirmation (approval) without the need for department meetings.
※ Note: For students applying to replace a thesis with a journal publication, selecting a thesis advisor is not necessary (submit only if needed for journal publication).
5. Qualifications for Thesis Advisors
a. Master’s Program: Full-time faculty of our university holding a doctoral degree (for departments in the arts: holding a master’s degree or higher) [Excludes faculty meeting the criteria in ‘c. Restrictions’ below]
b. Doctoral Program: Full-time faculty of our university holding a doctoral degree (for departments in the arts: holding a master’s degree or higher) who have published at least one paper in an internationally renowned SCI-level journal or at least three papers as the first or corresponding author in Korean Research Foundation (KRF) listed journals in the past three years [Excludes faculty meeting the criteria in ‘c. Restrictions’ below]
Qualifications for PhD Thesis Advisor: |
○ Must have research achievement points of 300 or more as a first or corresponding author in the past three years (based on faculty performance evaluation criteria). ○ Head office positions are considered average scores (e.g., Vice President, Office/Department Heads, Chaplain, Dean of Graduate School). ○ Faculty members who are abroad during research leave and cannot supervise are excluded (if they remain in the country during research leave and can supervise, they are eligible). ○ New faculty members will be handled after individual performance verification. |
c. Restrictions (for both Master’s and Doctoral Programs): Faculty members who fall under Article 19, Section 2 of the Faculty Performance Evaluation Regulations (Utilization of Evaluation Results).
d. Special Cases: Faculty recognized by the Graduate School Dean for achievements equivalent to those listed under ‘b’ due to the characteristics of the department.
6. Verification of Thesis Advisor Eligibility: Use the EDWARD system → Academics → Graduation → Search for Thesis Supervisor (Faculty who do not appear in the check cannot supervise theses).
